There really hasn't been a game since that quite scratches this exact itch. Released originally on the Xbox back in 2004 (and later brought to PC), this game was way ahead of its time.
You commanded massive divisions (Infantry, Archers, Cavalry, and insane support units like the massive Swamp Mammoth) across an active battlefield. But as soon as your troops collided with the enemy, you dove right into the thick of it to hack-and-slash as your faction's hero.
