The film is set during China's Song Dynasty and follows (Matt Damon), a European mercenary who travels to China in search of "black powder" (gunpowder). After being attacked by a mysterious creature, he and his companion Tovar (Pedro Pascal) seek refuge at the Great Wall, only to be captured by a secret military force known as the Nameless Order .
